We discovered this beautiful oasis about a year ago and fell in love with it! Even the roads leading to Sandy Creek Family Campground in Traphill, NC are an experience in themselves, loaded with cattle, meandering streams, towering peaks, rolling valleys, and adorable goats. (not recommended for motorcycles as the terrain is very uneven and primitive) Most people don’t notice this peaceful, rural, intimate spot; Sandy Creek Family Campground is only a “stone’s throw” away from the popular Stone Mountain State Park and the infamous Mountains to the Sea Trail. The landscape, trails, waterfalls, spectacular vegetation, and mountain views are truly unlike any other.
Barry, the owner of Sandy Creek Family Campground, is the perfect guide, very knowledgeable and accommodating; he always tries his best to please each camper. On one of our past adventures there, Barry introduced us to the native Jewelweed, or Pale Touch-Me-Not plant, which is abundant in the area. This plant has been utilized by Native Americans for centuries to heal minor cuts, scrapes, poison ivy, and poison sumac.
Another reason we have chosen this campground time and time again is the location-it is only 30 minutes from the quaint town of Sparta, NC which is very close to the Virginia border, particularly Independence, VA. Elkin, NC is the nearest town to the campground (20 minutes), where we pick up groceries, grab supplies, and anything that we run out of or forgot to bring. One thing to remember if you venture into the creek barefoot: WATCH OUT FOR CRAWDADS….
